Nonprofit rape crisis center offering survivor support, therapy and advocacy · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1972, making it the first victim service agency in Allegheny County and one of the first rape crisis centers in the US. It was founded by a group of lawyers, health professionals and activists who believed sexual assault victims deserved expert help right after a crime, and today it is the only agency in the county devoted solely to sexual violence. Its mission is to respond, educate and advocate to end sexual violence. PAAR offers no-cost services to children, adults and families, including a 24-hour helpline, in-person advocates at emergency departments and police stations, legal and victims' rights support, short-term trauma-focused therapy, and support groups. It also supports survivors of exploitation and trafficking and runs prevention education and trainings across the community.
