Coaching and mentoring are often confused — but they serve fundamentally different purposes. Here's how to know which one you actually need.
A mentor shares their own experience and gives you the benefit of their specific journey. A business coach is not primarily there to tell you what they would do — they help you discover what the right move is for you, your business, and your context. Mentors advise; coaches question.
Mentorship is most valuable when you're entering a field or industry your mentor knows deeply — and where their specific path is relevant to yours. A mentor who built a $50M SaaS company is invaluable if you're building SaaS. Their context translates directly.
Business coaching is most valuable when the challenge is behavioural or strategic in a non-industry-specific way — leadership effectiveness, decision-making speed, team dysfunction, scaling systems, or personal performance. A great business coach doesn't need to know your industry to help you.
Absolutely — they complement each other well. Many successful founders and executives have both: a mentor for industry context and network, a coach for performance and behaviour. The mistake is expecting one to do the job of both.
Look for coaches with a clear, documented methodology. Ask for client results — not testimonials, but specific outcomes. Check whether they have experience with businesses at your stage and scale. A coach who excels with early-stage startups may not be the right fit for a $20M business and vice versa.
Business coaching ranges from $500 to $5,000+ per month depending on the coach's track record and your business stage. Expect to invest in a minimum 3 to 6 month engagement. The ROI question is the right one to ask — a good coach should help you see concretely how their work connects to revenue.
