Online Coaching vs. In-Person: Does the Format Actually Matter?

The coaching world went digital during the pandemic and never fully came back. Here is what the research and experience actually show about format.

The Pandemic Experiment

When the coaching industry went fully remote in 2020, many coaches and clients feared the loss of something essential. Four years later, the evidence tells a more nuanced story. Online coaching works — sometimes better than in-person — and sometimes it misses something important.

What Research Shows

A 2021 study in the International Coaching Psychology Review found no significant difference in coaching effectiveness between online and in-person formats across most outcome measures. Clients reported equivalent levels of goal attainment, working alliance, and satisfaction. The relationship, it turns out, transcends the medium.

Where In-Person Has an Edge

Somatic and body-based coaching approaches — those that work with physical sensation, posture, and nervous system states — are harder to conduct effectively over video. Some clients also find that the physical act of travelling to a coaching appointment creates a psychological separation from everyday life that enhances their engagement with the work.

Where Online Wins

Online coaching eliminates geography as a constraint, opening access to the specific coach you need rather than the best coach within driving distance. It also reduces friction — easier to schedule, easier to fit into a busy life, no commute. Many clients report being more candid in online sessions, finding the slight distance of the screen actually lowers their defences.

The Right Answer

Format is a secondary consideration. The primary consideration is the coach. A great coach working over Zoom will outperform a mediocre coach in a beautiful office every time. Choose the coach first, then negotiate the format.
