What Is ICF Coaching? The International Coaching Federation Explained

The ICF credential is the global gold standard for coaching. Here's what it means, how it works, and whether it matters when you're hiring a coach.

What is the International Coaching Federation (ICF)?

The International Coaching Federation is the world's largest professional body for coaches, founded in 1995. It sets standards for coaching education and practice, awards internationally recognised credentials, and advocates for the profession globally. With over 50,000 members in 145+ countries, ICF credentialing is the closest thing the coaching industry has to a universal quality standard.

What are the ICF credential levels?

ICF offers three credentials: Associate Certified Coach (ACC) — minimum 60 training hours and 100 coaching hours; Professional Certified Coach (PCC) — minimum 125 training hours and 500 coaching hours; and Master Certified Coach (MCC) — minimum 200 training hours and 2,500 coaching hours. Each requires demonstrated competency assessment and ongoing professional development.

Does ICF certification guarantee coaching quality?

It is a credible baseline — not a guarantee. ICF credentials confirm that a coach has met minimum training, practice hours, and competency standards. They do not confirm that a coach is the right fit for your specific situation, that their style matches your needs, or that their specific expertise aligns with your goals. Use ICF certification as a floor, then evaluate the coach on their methodology, track record, and fit.

How much does it cost to get ICF certified?

The full cost of ICF credentialing includes: ICF-accredited training programme ($1,000 to $15,000 depending on the programme), mentor coaching ($500 to $2,000), the credential application fee ($100 to $375 depending on level), and renewal fees every three years. Ongoing professional development (minimum 40 hours per renewal cycle) is required to maintain credentials.

What is the difference between ICF-accredited and ICF-certified?

An ICF-accredited programme is a coach training school or programme that has been approved by ICF as meeting its curriculum standards. An ICF-certified coach is an individual who has completed training, logged coaching hours, and passed ICF's competency assessment. Always check which applies when you see 'ICF' on a coach's website.

Are there good coaches without ICF credentials?

Yes — some highly effective coaches have deep domain expertise, excellent client results, and well-regarded reputations without ICF credentials. This is particularly true in executive coaching (where former senior executives may have more relevant experience than a certified coach), business coaching, and specialist niches. ICF certification is a strong positive signal, but its absence is not automatically disqualifying.
