Leadership coaching is not just for struggling executives. Here's what it actually involves and why the world's best leaders invest in it.
Leadership coaching is a one-on-one development process designed to help leaders become more effective — not just more skilled. It addresses mindset, behaviour, communication, decision-making, and interpersonal dynamics. The goal is not to teach leadership theory but to change how a leader actually leads.
Leadership coaching benefits leaders at every level — from first-time managers to C-suite executives. It is particularly valuable during transitions (new role, new team, new level of responsibility), during performance challenges, and for high-potential leaders preparing for the next level.
Training delivers knowledge and skills to groups. Coaching is individual, personalised, and focused on behaviour change in real time. Training tells you what great leaders do; coaching helps you become one. The most effective leadership development combines both.
Common focus areas include: executive presence and communication, managing difficult conversations, building psychological safety on teams, navigating organisational politics, strategic thinking, decision-making under pressure, managing up, and transitioning from individual contributor to people leader.
Look for coaches who have themselves operated at or near the level you aspire to — credibility matters in leadership coaching. Look for ICF certification or equivalent, clear methodology, and references from leaders in organisations similar to yours. A discovery call is essential.
Most leadership coaching engagements run 6 to 12 months. Research shows that behaviour change in leadership contexts requires sustained practice and feedback over time — short interventions rarely produce lasting change. Some leaders maintain a coaching relationship for years.
