The terms executive coaching and leadership coaching are used almost interchangeably — but there are meaningful distinctions worth understanding before you hire.
In most practical uses, yes — the terms are largely interchangeable. Both focus on helping leaders become more effective through one-on-one development work. When a distinction is made, leadership coaching tends to focus more broadly on developing leadership skills and behaviours, while executive coaching specifically targets senior-level leaders in organizational contexts.
Leadership coaches work on the full spectrum of leadership development: communication and influence, managing and motivating teams, strategic thinking, decision-making, executive presence, conflict resolution, building trust, developing direct reports, and leading through change. The work is usually tied to specific leadership challenges the client is currently navigating.
Leadership training delivers content to groups — frameworks, models, skills. Executive coaching delivers personalised, one-on-one development to an individual in the context of their specific challenges, relationships, and organisational culture. Training tells you what great leaders do; coaching helps you actually become one. The most effective leadership development combines both.
Management coaching focuses on the practical skills of managing people: delegation, feedback, performance conversations, time management, and team operations. Leadership coaching addresses higher-order questions: vision, culture, influence, strategy, and the leader's personal presence and impact. Management coaching is about executing effectively; leadership coaching is about leading at scale.
Many providers offer both under different labels. ICF-certified coaches with deep corporate leadership experience are the standard. Some coaches specialise in specific industries, leadership transitions, or demographics (women in leadership, first-time executives). The label matters less than the coach's actual experience with challenges similar to yours.
Pricing is largely similar — both typically run $500 to $3,500 per session or $2,000 to $15,000 per month for ongoing engagements. Corporate-sponsored executive coaching programmes can cost significantly more. Leadership coaching from specialists in specific organisational contexts or sectors may command premium rates.
