◈ TRUECOACH GUIDE · MAY 20, 2026
Online coaching has become the default format for most coaching relationships. Here's what to expect, how to make it work, and what to watch out for.
Online coaching is conducted via video call (Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime), phone, or a combination of both. Sessions are typically 45 to 60 minutes and scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Many coaches also provide support between sessions via email, WhatsApp, or a coaching platform.
Research says yes — for most people and most coaching goals. A 2021 study in the International Coaching Psychology Review found no significant difference in outcomes between online and in-person coaching. The relationship quality matters far more than the format.
A reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a quiet private space. Most coaches use Zoom or Google Meet — both are free for clients to use. Some coaches use dedicated coaching platforms that include session recording, goal tracking, and messaging.
Choose a quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted. Think in advance about what challenge or decision you most want to address. Come with a specific question or situation rather than a general topic. Have a notebook nearby. And treat the session with the same intentionality you'd give an important meeting.
The real work of coaching happens between sessions. Complete any agreed actions. Keep notes on what comes up — observations, challenges, wins. Review the commitments you made. Coaches often say that what you do in the 6 days between sessions matters more than what happens in the session itself.
Technology failures can disrupt sessions. The slight physical distance of video can make it harder to build rapport initially. Somatic and body-based coaching approaches are more difficult to conduct remotely. And without commuting to a coaching appointment, some clients find it harder to mentally 'arrive' at the session. A brief pre-session ritual can help.
